Eclipse Viewing
May 20
Solar eclipses are not rare events, but perfect eclipses visible from our backyard are!
On Sunday, May 20th, the Moon will pass between the Sun and Earth creating a Solar Eclipse that sweeps across eastern Asia, the Northern Pacific Ocean, and onto the southwestern United States. Reno is the only major city along the shadow's narrow path!
MacLean Observatory
Reno is very near the central path of this eclipse, which crosses parts of the Southwestern United States. The period of maximum eclipse as viewed from Reno will be from 6:28-6:33 PM. A free solar eclipse viewing will be offered at the following location:
When: Sunday, May 20, 2012, from 5-7 p.m. (maximum eclipse, 6:28-6:33 p.m.)
Where: MacLean Observatory on the Redfield Campus of the University of Nevada, Reno, 18600 Wedge Parkway in southwest Reno
Looking directly at the sun without protection can cause serious eye damage. For safe viewing, the Planetarium will provide solar viewers available for purchase in the Science Store and distributed at community events, and will include links on their website for building your own safe-viewing devices.
For more information, go to www.planetarium.unr.edu/Gift_Shop.html.
Pyramid Lake
Another great option for viewing this astronomical event is Pyramid Lake, located 35 miles northeast of Reno, as the path of the eclipse passes directly over the south end of the lake and Nixon. For more information about Pyramid Lake, please visit www.pyramidlake.us.
Pyramid Lake is located 35 miles Northeast of Reno, NV and is the property of, and managed by, the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe. Pyramid Lake is known as being North America's most beautiful desert lake and is home to many year round recreational activities. Designated as the first National Scenic Byway entirely on an Indian reservation, it was recently named Nevada's first Preserve America Tribal Community. The lake occupies 112,000 surface acres inside the reservation boundary and has a shoreline of approximately 125 miles.

Wonderful Things
Wilbur D. May Museum
To May 23
As British archaeologist Howard Carter first opened the tomb of King Tutankhamun in 1922, his chief financial backer Lord Carnarvon anxiously asked, "Do you see anything?"
"Yes," Carter replied, "I see wonderful things."
More than 130 hand-crafted replicas of those "wonderful things" will be on display during the Wilbur D. May Museum's King Tut: "Wonderful Things" from the Pharaoh's Tomb exhibit from January 26 through May 23.
This kid-friendly exhibit offers visitors of all ages an opportunity to travel back in time and experience the beauty, majesty, history and wonder of the world's most notorious treasure find. This spectacular exhibit features reproductions of many of the Pharaoh's sacred and personal belongings. The originals are rarely, if ever, seen outside of Egypt. Highlights include:
* King Tut's iconic golden mummy case
* Magnificent state chariot
* Canopic Shrine
* Thrones
* Funerary Mask
* Bejeweled royal mummy and other jewelry
Additional artifacts help bring life to the turbulent times of King Tut's rule while telling the timeless story of the "Boy Pharaoh," an immortal character on the stage of world history.
Artisans from the Pharaonic Village in Giza, Egypt, spent over ten years accurately creating the replicas that make up the "Wonderful Things" exhibit. The exhibit is on display at the May Museum through an agreement between Washoe County and the Origins Museum Institute.
Exhibit hours are Wednesdays - Saturdays: 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., and Sundays from 12:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. Admission is $9.00 for adults, $8.00 for children under 18 and seniors 62 and over. Groups of 15 or more are $6.00 per person.
King Tut: "Wonderful Things" from the Pharaoh's Tomb is supported by a generous grant from the Wilbur May Foundation. Additional sponsorship provided by the Reno News and Review.
